A stunning new restoration of the director's cut of the thrilling 2001 cult classic BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF by director Christophe Gans, starring Samuel Le Bihan, Mark Dacascos, Jérémie Renier, Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci. The rain pouring down during that first fight fully utilizes the height channels with rumbling thunder rolling overhead and the drips, drops, punches, smacks, and groans working the front/center, sides, and rear channels. Behind the Scenes - this archival program takes a closer look at the production of Brotherhood of the Wolf. Christophe Gans' "Brotherhood of the Wolf" (2001) arrives on 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray courtesy of StudioCanal. As for supplements, while the vintage featurettes far outweigh anything newly produced, there are still hours upon hours of content to dig through here.

Now, the film is supposed to have some green/cyan, but on the original grade the saturation levels were different, plus blues and grays always had important roles to play. A stunning new restoration of the director's cut of the thrilling 2001 cult classic BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF by director Christophe Gans, starring Samuel Le Bihan, Mark Dacascos, Jeremie Renier, Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci. The Brotherhood of the Wolf takes French history and injects some whacky fiction with a story that revolves around a series of killing in late 18 th-century France and the legendary beast of Gévaudan. I don’t whether it’s just the fact that I’ve seen an awful lot more martial arts movies since I last saw Brotherhood of the Wolf or that I wasn’t in the right frame of mind when I rewatched it recently, but the film didn’t quite live up to my memory of it.Second place on the Blu-ray-only chart went to last week's champion, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's . The director went on to make a video game adaptation movie of Silent Hill (he is currently working on a sequel) and the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast. The film gains a much-needed new coat of paint with a stellar 4K restoration presented in 2160p with Dolby Vision HDR, Atmos audio, plus the supplements package is nothing to blink at.

STUDIOCANAL announce a stunning brand-new restoration of the thrilling 2001 cult classic BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF Director’s Cut by Christophe Gans, starring Samuel Le Bihan, Mark Dacascos, Jérémie Renier, Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci. Initially the film starts bright and cheery with bold sunlight and rich primaries - and it looks incredible now, by the way. During the reign of Louis XV, an isolated district of south-central France was haunted by the “Beast of Gévaudan” which savagely killed over 100 people, primarily women and children.During these sequences the director cleverly drops his over-stylised cinematography, and allows us to observe these characters as if this were just another period drama – playing it out almost like a French variation of Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles, as we get to know the two ‘foreign’ investigators, and find out that what they are up against is not only the fabled Beast, but also the prejudices of the aristocratic society in which they walk, weaving in a heady political backdrop that goes all the way from the King to the Vatican.

Studiocanal's 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Brotherhood of the Wolf does not disappoint, with a gorgeous native 4K restoration lovingly undertaken, complete with Dolby Vision HDR, and a great Atmos upgrade too. Note - there are three different cuts of Brotherhood of the Wolf, the original 143 minute French theatrical cut (also shown in the US) which was reluctantly created by Christophe Gans upon theatrical release because any longer and the film would suffer from reduced numbers of showings and an intermission; the UK hybrid cut, and the original French 151 minute 'director's cut, the last of which is the primary focus here, and really the best of all different cuts - it was the version Gans originally wanted to release at the cinemas after all. You can see how Émilie Dequenne's beautiful red dress is modified if you compare this screencapture from the old master and this screencapture from the new 4K makeover. In native 4K, HDR even creates the impression that the dynamic range of the visuals is off, which should not be the case. The two outdoor fight sequences at the start proved to be some of the most challenging and exciting scenes to work on.

None of the cuts are perfect, but for many the Director's Cut is the preferred version, however the elusive Theatrical Cut is a great bonus to finally get in HD and may have been been the go-to version to watch for some had it also received a seamless 4K integration. Unfortunately, I have to report that different areas of the Director's Cut of Brotherhood of the Wolf are regraded. Dolby Atmos mix will envelop you in a rich 3D soundscape, with effects like drops of water, sweeping legs getting ready for a kick, muskets cracking and other notes that all sound full of life in this new mix. It is challenging to put this film into a genre as it is a superb mix of many, superbly shot and directed by Christoph Gans it has rightly gained cult status over the years. La Legend’ is a fascinating piece too, which has an expert explore the history and facts of the actual Beast of Gévaudan.
