Some children can cope with more, and some children will need less, but use five to start with and see how it goes. Don’t Correct Every Spelling For a child that is in Year 5 or 6, they should be able to accurately spell the words that they have been taught in their English lessons. From what they have learnt about spelling and the English language, they should also be able to use this to spell words that they haven't been taught.

Choose a student to be the first traveller, and have them stand behind the person seated to their right. I hope you will find something that will work for you today! These spelling games for kids are all perfect for kids in elementary school. Hardly any words in the English origin end in 'j', 'v' or 'u'. There are some exceptions - see if you can think of any! Give students a list of words, and have them write each word in different colours using markers or crayons. For example, they could write the first letter of the word in red, the second letter in orange, the third letter in yellow, and so on. This spelling twist on the game of basketball requires a small hoop, which you can find at a cheap shop and mount on your whiteboard. Most are available with suction cups, so they can easily be removed. You’ll also need a small ball that can fit in the hoop, plus your spelling word list!Build your spelling words pyramid style. Begin with the first letter and add one more letter as you write your word down the triangle. 20. SPELLING RHYMES

As I said earlier, it’s thought a child needs to write a word 15 times until they really remember it. This doesn’t mean 15 times over and over again, but the more times that word is written, the more likely it is they’ll remember it. It will be in their muscle memory. Write their spelling out large for them and get them to trace over it in the colours of the rainbow. It will look pretty (or like a big mess) at the end, and they’ll have written out the word over and over! #19 Highlight Words In A Newspaper Spelling at home should also be fun and can involve the whole family. For more inspiration on how you can support your little ones with spellings at home, you can try:There has been numerous studies into whether joined handwriting helps children with their spellings and you can argue either way. After A LOT of research I think I fell on the side that claims joining handwriting helps spelling, for numerous reasons that I won’t delve into. I expect it is more of a case of it suits some children better and not others, as is so often true. It is worth considering if your child is really struggling. Capital Letters Are Different! Your child will enjoy spelling so much more if it goes hand in hand with lots of genuine praise. Be thrilled by your child’s achievements, however big or small. Sometimes just getting them to sit at a desk with a pencil in hand is a massive step forward. Try to treat them as an individual, and when they try hard or make progress for them then let them know you’ve noticed. We have more spelling activities for your KS2 students to try. They'll learn a lot from each resource but have fun at the same time so it won't even feel like work. Enjoy! Benefits of our Spelling Activities and Spelling Games (KS2): These beginning sound codes have been such a hit in the seasonal spelling activities that I knew I had to include them in this set, too. Try out each of the strategies to find one that best suits your child or your pupils. Every child learns differently, so experimenting with activities and games is a great way to discover the most effective way for that child to learn. Plus, using lots of strategies will keep things fun. This is especially important for spellings, as you're often learning the same words over and over again. New and unique ways to practise spellings will keep children's minds engaged and make sure they're motivated to keep learning. How to learn spellings in the KS1 classroom

Want to save more time

These are words that children will probably read and write the most, and therefore great ones to focus on learning first. Put ‘ high frequency words‘ into google and you’ll bring up a huge list, the first 100, 200 and so on. If you can help your children to spell these words correctly then they won’t be spelling them wrong over and over again every time they write them (which will be frequently!) Mnemonics Next 200 Common Words Interactive Word Search - Ensure that your students can spell the most common words in the English language. We recommend that you try out a range of spelling activities in your classroom. Not only does this keep your spelling lessons fun and varied, but it also allows you to experiment and find activities that work best for your pupils. Everyone learns differently, so this is a great opportunity to find out what's most effective for your class and individual pupils. Retaining ten new spellings a week is ambitious at best. They might well get 10/10 on their test, and two weeks later when their heads are full of the new spellings they now have to learn, those old ones will be completely forgotten. Spelling tests aren’t without purpose – they teach children self-motivation and encourage independent work. There’s also a good chance they’ll retain one or two of the spellings along the way. But it would be unfair to judge your child’s spelling ability by them.
