Flushing a parrot’s nostrils can offer short-term relief from the symptoms of sinusitis. This won’t resolve the cause of the infection, but it’ll reduce pain and discomfort for the bird. It’s possible they experienced a physical injury that’s preventing them from flying, but understand it’s more than likely a more rigorous reason. Because of the ‘open’ nature of a parrot’s anatomy, with no muscular diaphragm to separate the chest cavity from the abdomen, and free communication between the air sac system and the hollow bones, most introduced infectious organisms may start in one organ like the lung or the stomach, but will rapidly spread around the body to produce a septicaemia. The list of possible bacteria is long, and precise identification would depend upon laboratory culture and analysis. Such tests can include antibiotic sensitivity, revealing which antibacterial drug should theoretically kill the organism. The choice will be tempered by cost, availability, possible side-effects, and the practicalities of its administration to the patient. Drugs given in drinking water are often not taken in sufficient dose by the bird; palatable in-food medications are few and far between; while the daily administration of drops, tablets, or injections is stressful for the parrot and the owner.
The same can be said with your parrot, meaning that something is wrong if they’re having breathing issues. Parrots’ nares should be clear of foreign objects and fluids, especially for a healthy bird. You should be able to see a hollow “hole” where a nare is, and often you can also observe a bit of flesh and structures within the hole. Where Are Parrots Nostrils?
If you’ve recently performed spring cleaning or dust has accumulated in the home, this can get into the nasal cavities and cause the parrot to sneeze. This nose shape has a narrow and sharp appearance. Other features of this nose are smaller, rounder from the side, and have a slight slope at the tip. This nose is softer and rounder than the celestial nose. The celestial nose is slightly more prominent. According to studies, only 5 percent of those surveyed had a snub nose.
It is not dented, bleeding or bruised, either internally (underneath the surface of the beak) or externally. The nares of parrots are distinctly shown as two openings on the cere, just above the upper beak. In some species, the nares are more visible, while in others, they may be covered with a thin “curtain” of feathers. In the above image, you can see that my lovebird, Loki, has nares beneath a thin layer of feathers, so it looks almost like she has no nostrils. On the other hand, my green-cheeked conure, Bibi, has very prominent nares, and are not covered at all by any feathers. These symptoms may also be paired with difficulty breathing and lethargy. For a parrot, breathing issues involve the parrot displaying the following warning signs: You may live in a dry climate or a home with little humidity. If so, the parrot’s nares may dry out, which causes it to sneeze due to skin irritation, dust, and dry skin flakes accumulating inside the nostrils. Parrots, known for their vibrant plumage and ability to mimic human speech, also have a unique nasal structure that sets them apart from other animals. Unlike mammals, birds do not have a traditional nose with nostrils that they use for sniffing and detecting odors. Instead, birds have what are called nares, which are essentially their nostril equivalents.
