About this deal

The lively Sierra Tequila Reposado has won many international awards: 2012 Silver medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition, 2011 Gold medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition, and 2010 Gold medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition. Conclusion of the Sierra Tequila Reposado Mexican Gold: As we moved from on to 100% agave Tequilas, Patrón Silver Tequila took home a coveted Gold medal in the Super-Premium Blanco flight. The Tequila delivered a “bright, fresh” aroma, which led to “agave and pepperiness” on the palate. Corralejo Blanco Tequila received a respectable Silver. El Mayor Tequila Blanco also won a Gold medal for complex aromas of “ripe stone fruits and dried florals”, leading to “chilli, pepper and citrus” on the palate. Two Tequilas proved they have the credentials to win a Master medal in the following flight: 100% Agave Tequila – Ultra‐Premium Reposado. El Tequileño The Sassenach Select Double Wood Reposado bagged the top award for its “clean and fresh palate with increasing savoury notes, honey, vanilla, late pepper and bitter herbals”.

One of four Gold medals in this flight went to stablemate The Lost Explorer Mezcal Tobala. This mezcal had a “chocolatey aroma, slight vegetal notes and a hint of smoke” creating a “complex and well balanced” mezcal. Yola Mezcal 1971 also received the Gold seal of approval, with its “fruity pear drops” nose and “ripe agave”, which again would make it accessible for those new to the mezcal category. This was very delicious with dry notes on the nose,” said Gomez. “It was smooth, well balanced, with apricots and cinnamon notes on the mouth. The extra ABV gave it that extra push and brought out the aromas and flavours more.”Completing the flight was Sierra Milenario Tequila Extra Añejo, which walked away with a Silver medal. The Tequila was found to have a “hint of coffee” on the nose, with slight “vegetal notes” on the palate, complemented by a “balanced sweetness”.

In the oldest portion of the Tequila category, three ultra‐premium extra añejo Tequilas won a Master medal. First of all, Avión Reserva 44 received the Master award for its “nutty” aroma, and “moreish” flavours of “chocolate, toffee and citrus peel”. Complex” Tequila Gran Diamante – Reposado and Lokita Tequila Reposado, with its “nice texture”, received Silver medals. Zignum Añejo also received a Silver award because of its “resinous” qualities on the palate and for being “well rounded and balanced”. “I would say these weren’t traditional mezcals, but they were well aged, good añejos,” said Gomez. “Reposado and añejo is not traditional in the mezcal world, but more and more producers are ageing their products, following the Tequila, rum and whisky industries to be more accessible and friendly for the market. These products did this pretty well.” Meanwhile, BBC Spirits received two Gold medals for Lokita Espadin, enjoyed for its “new make spirit aromas” and “subtle smokiness”; and Lokita Tepeztate, with its “fruity aroma, hint of cinnamon” and “slightly dry finish”. Blue agave is a succulent found only in central Mexico, making it a highly-coveted ingredient. Premium tequilas contain 100 percent blue agave, but any spirit must contain at least 51 percent to be classified as tequila. What Is Mixto Tequila? The judges found the quality improved as they progressed to 100% Agave Tequila – Premium Reposado. A Master was bestowed upon Tequila Dahlia Cristalino. Rodriguez found this expression had an “explosive nose” full of “roasted agave, pepper and floral notes”. The palate had a “touch of sweetness” and “lingering” flavour. “This shows Tequila’s immense complexity, playful aromas and notes reminiscent of other spirits categories,” he enthused. “This feels more like a sipping liquid than a mixing liquid.” After distillation, Sierra Tequila Reposado rests in Bourbon casks for up to nine months, giving it its lovely, golden colour, and complex aroma. Reposado is the most popular quality of Tequila in Mexico. The freshness and irresistible fruitiness of Sierra Tequila Reposado is accompanied with delicate notes of vanilla, caramel, and with aromas of spicy herbs.

Among the five Gold winners in this flight was Calirosa Tequila Añejo, with its “dessert‐like” palate and “dry” finish, with “some marzipan and nuttiness”. On to the 100% Agave Mezcal – Reposado flight, and a Gold medal was awarded to Zignum Reposado, with an “enticing vanilla sweetness” on the palate. Señorío Reposado received a Silver in this flight. In conclusion, Sierra Tequila Reposado is a smooth and aromatic tequila, with notes of caramel, vanilla and spices, making it perfect to enjoy on any occasion. Its traditional winemaking process and careful aging in oak barrels make it a true treasure of Mexico. Undoubtedly, a drink worth trying. Summary Tequila Sierra ReposadoIn the 100% Agave Mezcal – Blanco heat, two Master medals were enjoyed. Ojo de Dios Mezcal was one of the recipients. In the more costly super‐premium price range, a Master was awarded to Olmeca Altos Reposado. Athavia noted the “fantastic integration of the oak on the palate”, which she said gave the Tequila “body, texture and a hint of sweetness”. Like pure gold, the Sierra Tequila Reposado Mexican Gold radiates through the white transparent glass of the stylishly designed bottle in the authentic Mexican design. The production process begins with a double distillation in copper stills, followed by resting in American oak barrels that have contained bourbon for six to nine months. This process gives tequila its smooth flavor and characteristic golden color. Aromatic and flavor notes Chambers said: “This feels like a category where producers are trying to experiment and push the limits a little bit within the rules. It was a pretty great flight.”
