About this deal

In the hiking community, everyone is expected to follow voluntary leave-no-trace (LNT) practices. However, if even 1% of 10,000 visitors per season on a 20 mile trail don’t know or don’t care about LNT practices and leave garbage or human excrement along the trail, that’s 100 incidents of the environment being trashed each year. Camping on deep snow is a low-impact way to experience popular hiking destinations. One of the things to be aware of is that while some bivvy bags will position themselves as being breathable, it can be difficult to have a fully breathable and fully waterproof bag. If you’ve ever seen news photos or videos from an emergency event, you may have seen paramedics wrapping victims in what looks like a thin blanket of aluminium foil. These foil blankets help victims to regulate their body temperature while they receive medical attention, but how exactly do they work? layer Ripstop nylon upper / 10,000 mm hydrostatic head / 10,000/m2 breathability / width: Shoulders – 80 cm; Foot – 50 cm

The powder is an odor neutralizer, puts a sealing layer around the waste to seal in odor, and turns liquid into a solid. That is why you add the Biffy powder into the bag before you do the deed. The Biffy bag itself doesn't have corners to ensure equal distribution of Biffy powder. The fly sheet is 5000mm waterproof and the bivy tent has two ventilation windows – one behind your head, one at your feet and there is also a big side door which can be left partially unzipped. Total end-to-end length of the Geetop is 3m (although this includes a vestibule at the foot end), so this is definitely stretching towards tent territory, but who’s counting? The height is good too at 91cm. The Paratex Dry technical material is a breathable and 100% waterproof fabric. It is treated with what is known as a Hydrophillic Polyurathane (PU) coating to raise the hydrostatic head to >5000mm. I took my Hilleberg Soulo into the mountains to give it a good test in wind and rain and the weather gods obliged with 60km/h winds and hours of heavy rain The tent held up fine to the wind for the remainder of the night, but I woke in heavy rain to find that water had gotten inside, although I'm not sure where it was coming from. My things stayed dry thanks to my bivi bag and dry bags and I cleaned up the water with a microfiber towel. I hadn't seam sealed any part of this tent as the seams are taped, but I'm thinking I might need to seal it.. possibly the guy line attachment points on the sides are letting water in although I don't know for sure.As mentioned above, some of the best bivvy bags include a rigid hoop in the hood which keeps the material off your face while you are sleeping, but even so it can be a little claustrophobic inside. But, to sleep in, it was just fine. It makes a great stealth shelter being only 75cm high, and for once, there were no leaky seams. Not even any condensation due to the wind. I measured gusts of up to 37km/hr but had no concerns in this lil bad boy, as it’s so low profile with a small surface area, this kinda wind was no issue for it at all. It kept me safe and dry, and I found it to be very good at being what it is ~ a very tiny tent. If you like that kinda thing. Forest fires are not the reason for avoiding fires in the winter because forest fires are unlikely to ignite where the landscape is covered in snow, but in the dryer months, campfires are also a major human cause of wildfires. Even if you are outside of an Alpine zone where fires are prohibited, it is still a good idea to avoid building unnecessary campfires. The tent didn't budge at all and felt like a perfect lil safe haven - exactly what I wanted for winter in the mountains :) One thing to note is that if you are over 6ft tall (I’m 6ft3 or 195cm) then you may be stretched for sleeping space inside – the sleeping area is 213cm long but this includes a sloping roof. Something to bear in mind.

On some routes, you can expect a ranger to hand you a blue bag when you are issued a permit. If you want a better experience, bring your own WAG bag. Some popular ones (see photo above) contain a large main bag with odor-reducing powder that turns liquids into solids. They also include another bag to seal in the main bag. The toilet paper included is a bit skimpy, so bring some extra. The Hunka comes in three different colours: green, red and blue. It isn’t the lightest, but at 330g it’s still a big weight saving on any tent. It has a hood that goes nicely around the outside of your sleeping bag hood, with a simple drawstring at either side so it can be tightened around you and your bag. It has no additional venting or faffy zips and the bag tapers towards your feet. You can pair it with a tarp for added protection from the elements, if you like, but many choose not to. And that’s it. There’s not much else to say. The Hunka is a simple product with no-frills. But, on a clear summer’s night, where your aim is to feel at one with nature with your face exposed to the fresh air, then it’s absolutely the best value product on the market. A lil camp using superlight gear; the 'Big 3' tent, sleeping bag and mat all coming in at under 1.5kg! Which is the lightest I've ever tried, but, the mat broke as soon as I lay on itIn use, I tested it on two separate occasions. The first on a mild autumn night when I was able to keep the hood pretty much open all night. It was wonderful to see the stars, and I recommend reading this great stargazing guide if that’s of interest to you. On a second occasion, I had some heavyish rain but found that I stayed relatively dry overnight with a small amount of condensation on the hood from my breath – nothing to worry about and my sleeping bag was not wet at all. This tent came with me on my recent Rhinogs trip (video of this trip is next on the editing pile) and it was just perfect 👌 With over 7 billion people on the planet and growing, and very little wilderness remaining, it is probably time to rethink how they experience and share the wilderness. You may even find that once you experience the wilderness without old-style bushcraft and fire building, you will like it even more. Thank you! Outdoor Research should need no introduction. A fantastic company based in Seattle on the West Coast of the USA, they have continuously been at the height of innovation and quality since their inception in the early 1980s.

Ripstop outer with 5000mm hydrostatic head / 5000g/m2 breathability / 70D Ripstop floor / 8.5mm aluminium poles / supplied with ultralight alloy pegs. However, in an emergency situation, especially one that is wet and windy, a bivvy bag (or basic survival bag) can offer enough protection to save your life. For this reason, it is advisable that all trail runners carry a survival bag when running in high or remote areas – even if you’re not expecting to be out for long. Is a bivvy bag worth it?Getting in and out is ‘interesting’ as is the case with all bivvy bags. Our technique is to get it all set up with the head section fully unzipped, then undo our boots and literally step out of the boots one at a time onto the top end of the bivvy. It’s then a simple matter of sitting down and sliding in. Similarly, Canyonlands National Park requires campers to use a washable or reusable toilet system at the Maze. Like river sports enthusiasts, campers can use washable toilet systems as an alternative to human waste bags because they are less concerned with weight. It’s no-frills, but no-frills is sometimes fine if the bag is light and protective, and that’s certainly the case here. Some one-man tents are now so small and light, it’s hard to imagine that it’s even possible to take a more minimalist approach. But it is: enter the bivvy bag. What is a bivvy bag?
