As of Time After Time!, Goh has more individual Pokémon species under his current ownership than any other main character, including Ash.
Goh has owned five starter Pokémon (six if his temporary Cyndaquil is counted), the most of any of Ash's traveling companions. Goh appears as a main character in the manga Pokémon Journeys: The Series, playing the same role as he does in the anime. Goh shares a very close friendship with Chloe due to him knowing her since they were little. At times, Goh brushes off Chloe's concerns for him but knows that she is just looking out for him. When he was little, Goh only wanted Chloe as his friend and nobody else. However, after meeting and getting to know Ash, Goh realized he needed to make friends besides Chloe and accepted him as one. Goh's friendship with Ash is very strong, though they sometimes get competitive and annoyed with each other and even butt heads. Ever since the events in Ivysaur's Mysterious Tower!, Goh seems to strongly admire Ash for his determination, passion, and compassion for Pokémon, especially the extraordinary bond he shares with his Pikachu. Goh has occasionally taken inspiration from Ash, with the bond between Ash and Pikachu inspiring Goh to catch his own in Gotta Catch a What?!, as well as deciding to catch an Altaria in Reuniting for the First Time! after watching Ash battle against one in the previous episode.
White Flower Floette was encountered in Shalour City as a Flabébé, but her capture was not confirmed until The Cuteness Quotient!. In Under Color of Darkness!, her flower was revealed to have lost a petal, causing her to be unable to fly properly on it anymore. Ash and Goh traveled to Kalos to find a new flower for her, eventually succeeding. Almost immediately afterwards, she evolved into Floette. Goh then decided to release her so that she could grow and protect a garden of white flowers for other Flabébé. Goh grew up in Vermilion City in the Kanto region with his parents, Camille and Walker, and grandmother, Halta. Sometime later, Goh met Chloe and became his only friend growing up. Three years prior, during a family trip to Azalea Town, Goh befriended Horace, who was looking for the Mythical Pokémon Celebi. Goh offered to help with the search, but as night closed in, the boys promised to meet up again the next day. However, Horace didn't show up, leading Goh to feel betrayed. Starting from Trial on a Golden Scale!, Goh occasionally took on Project Mew Trial Missions. Initially, he preferred missions where he could act on his own, but eventually, he learned to cooperate in a team. The Trial Missions culminated in Chasing to the Finish! with Goh's capture of Regieleki, earning Goh enough Project Mew tokens to become a Chaser.
Goh's catching style is mainly based on the gameplay mechanics of Pokémon GO and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, all of which feature catching wild Pokémon without having to battle them. Just as during this period, an image of Goh appears during Photo Bomb, when this occurs a Scyther appears to be captured.
