Rosen's This Is Not My Nose: A Memoir of Illness and Recovery (2004) is an account of his ten years with undiagnosed hypothyroidism; a course of drugs in 1981 alleviated the condition. The English Association has given Michael Rosen's Sad Book an Exceptional Award for the Best Children's Illustrated Books of 2004, in the 4–11 age range. Yet the poem’s tone is clearly suggesting that it is the adult whose mind is limited and who has something to learn from his child, rather than vice versa. Part memoir, part self-help manual, Rosen’s latest publication considers what it is to get better, “what it means, and how we do it. The story centres on Shona (played by Drew Hylton), a teenager who is studying Oliver Twist at school while navigating financial hardship and her father’s mental health crisis.
