Description

If the pipes and waste are below the floor, you can choose any height of shower tray. However, the most popular choice is a low-profile or flat, flush-fitting shower tray. Both trays sit flush to the floor, but the flat tray has no lip around the edge, while the low-profile tray has a small outer lip. Both allow easy access to the shower and create a minimalist, contemporary look. It's important to clean a shower tray regularly to prevent soap scum, limescale and grime from building up. Here are some top tips for keeping a shower tray clean and looking its best:

As I’m sure you can imagine, digging up a solid concrete floor to trace an existing shower waste pipe to a main drain, moving that pipe to a new position or running a new pipe and then covering it over is a fair amount of work. Easy to fit: The stone matrix has screw retention so that the feet from the leg set (sold separately) can be screwed directly into the base of the tray With the tiles removed the wall was also inspected closely. Again, long term moisture ingress had caused considerable damage so we also pulled a section of wall away and replaced it. Shower cubicles are used to keep your space protected from splashes during showering while also providing your bathroom with a stylish touch. Our comprehensive range of shower enclosures boasts everything you need to install a fresh new shower cubicle or renovate a tired old one. Are shower enclosures adjustable?Repaired sections of wall retiled with ceramic tiles Position tray in place and mark access hatch and waste Next, mark the floor area inside the tray waste so that you know exactly where you need to cut the hole for the waste.

Note: We always recommend that a shower tray is installed before the walls are tiled as this allows for a much more water tight joint as you can then tile down to the tray and seal it correctly. How to install a low level or low profile shower tray As we had to replace most of the floor area that the tray would be sitting on, this gave us the opportunity to ensure that the floor would be totally flat and level for the tray to sit on. Before you start, you need to make sure that the floor beneath the tray is capable of supporting it. It needs to be completely firm, with no flexibility as this can cause problems. Mark out where the tray is going to go and replace any floorboardsin this area with marine plywood that is at least 18mm. Step 2 - Cut Access Hatch Due to the damp damage to the walls we had to remove quite a few tiles, not only as they were loose, but also to replace the damaged sections of wall. Installing a shower tray on floorboards or chipboard: the plumbing pipes and waste will likely be below the floorboards, so you can fit a low-profile or flat, flush-fitting shower tray. These trays are much easier to install because there is no adjustment to the height.

What Are Shower Trays Made Of?

Tiling around a shower should always be done after installation so that a good seal can be created. Tiles should stop short of the tray by about 3mm allowing an expansion joint. Finally, apply a suitable shower sealant around the perimeter. To get a professional finish, tape can be used on either side of the joint. Apply the silicone and smooth with a wet finger or silicone shaping tool. Carefully remove the tape and allow the silicone to cure. Shower Tray Plinth Once the silicone has cured you can then fix in place the remaining tiles. Don’t be tempted to tile right down to the tray, leave a 2-3mm gap. Allow the tile adhesive to cure for at least 24 hours to ensure its gone off properly. This is caused by the tray not being installed level. The tray will have been made with a fall on the internal surface so that water will drain correctly to the waste outlet. Reinstalling so that the tray is perfectly level will solve this problem. Creaking shower tray. Once the tile adhesive had cured correctly the battens were removed leaving roughly a 2 inch gap that we could then tile once the ray was fully in place. For further help and advice on ceramic tiling, see our project here.

This may be caused by movement in the base. It can also be caused by poor application of the sealant. If so, remove the sealant and redo it taking care to ensure that the joint is clean and free from debris and that the sealant fills the void between tray and tiles. Pooling of water in the shower. If you’re buying a shower tray to go with a shower enclosure you already have, the tray shape must match the shape of the enclosure. This is because the tray and enclosure, when joined together, must form a tight seal to ensure water can’t escape. We sell a large variety of square shower enclosures. They're perfect for tighter spaces or those who wish to achieve a minimalist look. You'll find square options in widths starting at 700mm for particularly compact bathrooms, right through to enclosures in excess of 1000mm for roomier bathrooms. What type of shower enclosure do I need?As we have mentioned installing a new shower tray with the waste in the same position as the old one should minimize potentially a great deal of work. In this case we used a prying bar to gently lever the front of the tray up by gently working your way around the front edge, loosening it as you go. As the tray was old, the adhesive was beginning to fail so after a little work it came away easily In this example we will be replacing an old 900×900 quadrant shower tray with a new 900×900 low level quadrant shower tray.

To fix your shower tray firmly to the floor, the best stuff to use is a strong construction adhesive. Clean the base thoroughly first to remove any grease and grime and then spread it evenly in beads over the base of the tray. Use your sealant gun to force the sealant into the joint so that it’s fully filled and then dampen your finger and run it over the surface to both smooth it off and force it fully into the gap. Alternatively, if the pipes and waste are above the floor, you’ll need a raised shower tray. They have a high outer lip, and the base of the tray is raised above the floor to accommodate the plumbing pipes and the wastes underneath. Turning a low-profile shower tray into a raised one by using a shower tray riser kit is possible. This consists of adjustable legs and clip-on side covers which conceal the legs and pipe work. These covers can be removed easily as and when needed to gain access to the pipes.

Remote Delivery

The first job is to remove the old tray if it’s still in place. Depending on how it’s fixed, this can be fairly straightforward or a bit of a nightmare. To find out how to fit both a raised or flat shower tray read on below. Should I install a raised or flat shower tray? Once the tile adhesive has cured, you can then get some grout in there. Use a suitable sponge to force the grout in to the joint, making sure it’s fully filled with no gaps. Tips on grouting can be found in our project here. With someone filling the waste for you, use a torch to inspect the waste trap and all the pipework for any signs of leaks. If there are any tighten any compressions joints as required.
