I loved this book. It's similar yet different than others I've read. I quite like Harry's seemingly gruff, no nonsense take towards the people around him and the suspects. He really does outwit each and every one of them like a boss. And the way he goes about it? Look, I laughed. He makes them look so dumb. Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is summoned to France after receiving a distressing letter with a urgent cry for help. Upon his arrival in Merlinville-sur-Mer, the investigator finds the man who penned the letter, the South American millionaire Monsieur Renauld, stabbed to death and his body flung into a freshly dug open grave on the golf course adjoining the property. Meanwhile the millionaire's wife is found bound and gagged in her room. Apparently, it seems that Renauld and his wife were victims of a failed break-in, resulting in Renauld's kidnapping and death. Again, Patterson's skill for producing furiously paced fiction are evident as the novel breezes by rapidly. The short chapters keep the narrative leaping with increasingly taut plot elements, but there's an emotional commitment that makes our protagonist even more amiable and involving. 1st to Die is a novel that works as an intense series of character portraits that will leave the reader touched and delighted.

Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide. Harry Duncan comes across as fairly bland though. He is certainly fearless and persistent and you cheer him along in his quest. But that spark which ignites a character into life was missing for me. A 3 rating is really only a measure against Thomas Perry's other writing. He is a consistently excellent thriller and suspense writer and I think most fans of the genre will give this a 4 or 5 rating. Masterly…the intricate plot matches superior characterizations.
